Heavily urbanized areas of the world, like the Istanbul metropolitan area and the Sea of Marmara, have become
low-oxygen or hypoxic zones due to the pressures of urbanization, runoff and nutrient loads in coastal areas.
In the summer of 2021, the Sea of Marmara’s coastline was covered in a thick layer of mucilage for more than six months. Pollution, warmer temperatures, and stagnant water led to an unprecedented proliferation of phytoplankton, whose mucus settled on the sea bed, killing many endemic coral, seagrass and shellfish species.

In a growing metropolitan area where development pressures can outweigh conservation efforts, a

ctively restoring coastal habitats and implementing nature-based infrastructure is a challenge. Given sea level rise projections for mid-century and end of century, nature-based solutions are also critical for creating resilient and dynamic coastlines that can help communities adapt.

Through this project supported by National Geographic Society, we are developing an evidence-based, inclusive research process to support coastal restoration planning, with a goal of preserving and restoring at least 30% of the coastline, in the Sea of Marmara working with communities and scientists on the ground to map the unmapped in contexts where geospatial data is limited or not accessible by the public.

While the international community saw arid zone development in the post-war era as a fight against desertification, arid lands are characterized by contrasts shaped by access to water.

Since pre-historic times, people have lived in arid zones, which are not necessarily marked by an absolute lack of water, but a different evolution of human settlements in a context of contrasts and extreme variability.

Desertification is contingent on spatial factors, on power, infrastructure and borders.

Following the Jordan River from Lake Tiberias to the Dead Sea, we see a landscape transformed by modern agriculture and infrastructure. Downstream of Jordan River, the Dead Sea is shrinking as freshwater is diverted to date farms, fish ponds and mineral extraction. Fresh water aquifers along its perimeter of the lake are receding with it.
This research, conducted with support from the Jordan Valley Authority, Aga Khan Foundation and MIT International Science and Technology Initiative, uses remote sensing imagery and groundtruthing surveys to map the uneven distribution of water access and the risk of climate-induced displacement in Jordan Valley.

The Princes’ Islands archipelago, two kilometers off Istanbul’s Asian shores, have offered freedom and isolation from the mainland metropolis for centuries and historically has been a refuge for artists, writers and thinkers. Today, the fragile ecology of the islands are under the pressure of development from the mainland metropolis.

In many ways, the islands reflect a past Istanbul, but can also speak optimistically about its future, one where new relations are found between the unique geography of the city, its guests, residents, its flora and fauna. Taking inspiration from Bruce Chatwin’s Songlines, “Island Songlines” explores how a contemporary definition of Nature is emerging today in the islands through the evolving migration patterns of birds, the depletion of fisheries, the transplantation of corals, the debates on banning horse carriages and conservation of the islands’ Mediterranean pine and maki forests.
With citizen scientists and volunteers, the local initiative Adalar Savunması has collected over 780 observations of 373 species as part of their Biodiversity Inventory Study. These maps visualize the rich biodiversity of the islands, a unique Mediterranean microclimate, as mapped by citizen scientists, from white storks and Spanish lavendar to Japanese crabapples and Turkish pine trees. These series of maps were prepared in collaboration with Daniel Marshall.

Half a billion people live under conditions of severe water scarcity in many arid and semi-arid regions of the world, marked by an increasing demand for water and unprecedented droughts.

The Jordan River basin, a peri-urban regional corridor, is in a particularly waterstressed region with worldwide lows in per capita water availability that is projected to decrease further by 20 percent by 2050.

As the valley’s communities, especially smallholders and refugee laborers, will behard hit by the impact of a drying climate, Jordan Valley Authority and Ecopeace Middle East were interested in identifying strategies for water conservation through regional land use and landscape planning. In the absence of fair reallocation mechanisms and regional planning at

the scale of the watershed, a roadmap for
establishing common environmental flows

is infeasible. Rather than offering a utopian

vision for the rehabilitation of Jordan

River, as an addendum to the masterplan

for Jordan Valley Authority, we developed a

synthesis plan for ecological restoration

and avenues for generating water savings

throughout the valley.

Muhit.co is a platform that uses crowdsourcing and data mining to share citizen-generated data with neighborhood representatives and municipalities to provide input to masterplans and improve the quality of life in cities, deployed in several districts of Istanbul. This open source tool gathers, analyzes and shares citizen-generated data to inform how city governments can function better by highlighting community priorities. The disaggregated data enables local governments and organizations to take action on geo-tagged issues and reach their constituents easily for a continued dialogue.

This digital tool was also supplemented with a series of in-person Collaborative Mapping Workshops to gather ideas and share feedback. The team developed an action-oriented mapping event developed for the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, bringing together practitioners, students and public servants both educating stakeholders around participatory planning methods and helping develop some of the submitted issues into planning projects adopted by municipalities.

This project has been supported by a range of institutions including TechSoup Europe, Community Volunteers Foundation (TOG), MIT Legatum Center for Entrepreneurship in Development and the MIT Global Ideas Competition.

As part of the NYC Deparment of City Planning’s ongoing climate resiliency initiatives, the city is working with coastal communities to update the special zoning regulations that apply in the 100 and 500 year floodplain.

The term "100-year flood" is used to simplify the definition of a flood that statistically has a 1-percent chance of occurring in any given year. Hurricane Sandy was a 300-year storm. In this new paradigm, the city is hoping to make regulations promoting flood-resistant design permanent to ensure that neighborhoods are more resilient to flooding and climate change.

Seagrasses play a large role in regulating ocean environments, storing more than twice as much carbon from planet-warming carbon dioxide (CO2) per square mile. However, human activity is helping destroy the equivalent of a soccer field of these seagrasses every 30 minutes around the world, according to the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP). In the Hudson Valley, the last two decades have seen about a 30% decrease in the surface area of submerged aquatic vegetation, according to our study. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation attributes this decline to the sediment pulses from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, possibly inhibiting growth by burying stems and blocking light. Even with ongoing conservation efforts, climate risks are impacting these key aquatic habitats.
Ongoing restoration efforts play an important role in carbon sequestration (up to 1,000 tones of carbon dioxide sequestered per acre annually) and in creating habitats for juvenile fish that can hide within the leaves. Many tidal marshes and vegetated areas of the Hudson River are nurseries for young fish,
habitats for macroinvertebrates, and food for waterfowl. Submerged aquatic vegeration, including the commonly found
water celery (Vallisneria americana),
is an important source of oxygen in the water in Hudson River and ecosystem health.

Mexico’s ambitious housing policy to provide affordable housing to all has led to the construction of ex-urban housing estates outside of Mexico City, which have gradually been abandoned. This research, as part of a partnership with INFONAVIT aimed to generate novel housing, infrastructural and settlement forms in the valley of Zumpango, north of Mexico City.
After the Mexican Revolution of 1910 the Mexican federal government created a communal resource-holding institution, the ejido, to redress long-standing land-tenure inequality. Between the 1930s and the late 1970s, half of Mexico's entire surface became ejido lands. Although the 1992-1993 reforms to the Mexican Constitution prohibited any future expansion of communal lands and allowed privatization of communal resources, privatization schemes have slowly transformed communal ejidos to large housing estates in rural areas outside of Mexico City.

1.

Using open data sources overlaid with agricultural census data, the maps shows remaining ejidos (communal lands) and agricultural areas in the Valley of Mexico, north of Mexico City 2. Water system in Zumpango region

With over 1,000 kilometers of canals, 1,500 bridges and a long-standing focus on urban innovation, the city of Amsterdam is an ideal place to test new, water-based mobility solutions to provide insights for many coastal cities.

The ‘roboat’ project — a research collaboration between MIT’s Senseable City Lab and AMS, the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions — seeks to design and test the world's first fleet of autonomous boats in the city of Amsterdam.

As urban food systems are becoming more globalized and consolidated,
increasingly centralized networks involving fewer individual actors aresupplying a growing proportion of the world’s food. Using geo-tagged database of food providers (farms, allotment gardens, urban farms, wholesale centers) and users (restaurants, catering services, markets), this research intends to show how the canals of Amsterdam can become the locus of a food network to connect local and regional growers to the city center.
